Hotel Terminology

Time: 1 Hour Topic: Hotel Terminology Objective: For the student to identify the use of different sentence constructions used in different Hotels. This lesson will demonstrate the vocabulary used in the Hotel Industry and highlight the importance of the voice tones used in sentence constructions. Please take a look at the following greetings used in the Hotel Industry. The purpose of this, is to demonstrate where to apply and how to apply formal and informal sentence constructions. “Good morning this is the St James Hostel” ( 2 star) “Good morning this is the Marriott Hotel in Swiss Cottage, How can I help you?” (4 Star) “Good morning this is the Park lane Hilton, this is Simon speaking, how may I help you?” These are all questions that require a very different response. All these hotels appeal to different types of clients, and every question indicated above requires a different response both in terms of voice tone and in terms of sentence structure. As a speaker, it is ultimately you

Voice Tones

There are many different reasons as to why many of you are learning English as a second language, some are learning in order to create more opportunity others require English for use socially.   Whatever the reason, we all share one common goal and that is to be understood. My pronunciation classes have been based on my experience of teaching over 350 Skype classes.   My experience with different nationalities include; Russia, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands, Japan, France and Korea and have highlighted some common factors between all my students, these are indicated bellow:   Sh- sound Ch- sound Th- sound V- sound B- sound Y- sound J- sound L- sound S- sound Ed- sound       All of the above have proved to be challenging sounds, my classes have a unique way of hitting that correct sound. I achieve this by breaking words and transforming the spelling to reflect how the word actually sounds. Of the research conducted nearly 80 percent of Students wanted to perfect pronun

Goals And Objectives

Image
Setting realistic goals will help you with your study, my advice is to consider a very simple analogy; if you set a goal of achieving 4 targets a day ( speaking, listening, reading and writing). Each one of these components only taking 15 min then you will be able to remain motivated and will have a more effective study programme. Prior to taking classes with me, most of my students have been forcing themselves to complete up to 2 hours of study per day which is fantastic however they did not have a study plan, nor the motivation to keep that pace for a long period of time eventually proving to be nothing more than a chore. Study planning need not be complicated, if you would like help to design a plan then contact me today, I have 4 spaces left for my September course which has a focus on developing conversation, speed of speech and pronunciation. If you think that I can help with your study, promotion, new job or new life in another country, then contact me today! Classes are

How Do I Improve My Conversational Skills?

Image
If you are learning English as a second language, you will have already searched through many books and countless website pages on how to improve on this skill. The following key points, are in my opinion essential components to the successful development of this particular skill.   Listening:   This skill is directly linked to a successful conversation, yet most students fail to recognise its importance. Listening provides you with the information required to start, continue or end a conversation. It provides the subject matter, opinion or conclusion within the process.   There are various ways to acknowledge that we are listening to a conversation, ironically it is not all based on speech.our body language, posture, eye contact, gestures, facial expressions and actions play a key part.   I recommend different methods for developing this skill, watching visual resource by way of videos on the Internet or TV provide useful hints and tips. Recording your own voice and playing it bac

The Two Types Of Interviews

Image
There are two types of interviews; Traditional and Competency, most of us have not even experienced the later, however in 2012 Competency based interviews have become the preferred style for HR Managers. What's the difference between the two? Traditional interview structures usually involve an HR manager asking a series of questions with the objective of finding out whether your skill base and educational background match the requirements for the position that the candidate has applied for. CBI interviews require you to justify your experience and demonstrate how your educational background could be applied in various presented scenarios. Key areas that CBI interviews examine are; personnel, interpersonal, motivational, decision making, people and organisational. If you require practice for either type of interview, whether it's for a new position or a promotion contact me today! Posted with Blogsy

The Learning Process

Image
These are common problems that students have encountered when learning a second language: Too many different teachers, causing problems with pronunciation. Non native speaking teachers, who although are excellent with grammar and structure are very often challenged with developing students conversational skills. Students are booking extensive courses which in my opinion are both too long and in most cases overpriced. Students cannot find the motivation to carry on with the learning process because classes no longer challenge their skills. Teachers are unable to identify students strengths and weaknesses and subsequently lessons are not developing the students confidence. Students and teachers are not embracing technology such as tablets or laptops saving time, fuel and effort. Students are not recording their voice and are so are subsequently relying on others to tell them what they sound like. My advice to you, is to take the learning process seriously it is after all

Interview Skills

Image
The best way to practice for an interview is to prepare for it in sections. There are over 100 questions that interviewers commonly use at all levels and it would simply be impossible to discuss them all in this article, so I have picked a few of the most commonly used questions. The Introduction This is regarded as the most important question in the entire interview.the answers should sound natural and not scripted, kept short and summarised. Used as an answer to the question; " tell me about yourself", you are advised to limit your response to work related facts unless otherwise instructed. Confidence, eye contact and body posture all play a significant role which should be taken into consideration. When speaking remember to apply the correct speed to provide clarity and try and listen to the questions, so that you do not provide irrelevant information. 2. Why do you want to work for this organisation? Preparation for a suitable answer should incl

Listening Skills

Image
If you are going to develop your listening skills then you will have to get used to different accents. The English accent (UK) varies from region to region throughout the UK. Platforms such as YouTube are one of the best resources for this type of activity. Here are a few different accents you can compare: Birmingham Manchester Sheffield London In my listening classes, audio sound clips are played through your computer, you are asked to take notes and answer questions about what you have heard. The purpose of these classes is to familiarise you with different accents, speed of speech, and voice tones. Most learners are more comfortable with developing their writing skills than their speaking and listening skills. In my opinion listening skills are as important as developing the others. Training yourself to listen to key information comes with practice and time. I attach a link to a website that I found useful to demonstrate the importance of this Skill. http:/
